The advent of EC Regulation No. 1924/2006 entails a complete overhaul of the way nutrition and health claims are made in food within the EU. Whilst the regulation will open up more markets for products making health claims, with one approval system covering all Member States, it requires high standards of scientific evidence underpinning the use of health claims. This can be viewed as both a challenge and an opportunity for food companies.
